Designing out waste

In Coachtopia, we’ve always been about making beautiful things by reimagining waste. But with our Alter/Ego collection, we’re thinking ahead to the future waste produced by our most loved Coach bags, and working to design out that waste at the point of creation. It’s our next step towards a zero-waste future.

The Alter/Ego collection

All our Alter/Ego bags are crafted with the specific leather scraps that are left over from the creation of iconic Coach styles—including the Tabby, Hamptons and Brooklyn bags—which might otherwise have gone to landfill.

How it works

Step one

We measure and quantify the leftover leather scraps
from a top-selling Coach style, so we can create an
Alter/Ego design that repurposes those scraps.

Step two

We cut out bag patterns for the Coach style from
quality leather hides—inevitably, there are some leather
scraps left behind.

Step three

We cut those luxe leather scraps into small squares and
stitch them together to create an Alter/Ego bag in
Upcrafted™ leather.

Step four

The result? Two beautiful bags made with the same
Coach leather, designed together to save leftover
leather scraps from landfill.

Meet Lola Tung
(and her Alter/Ego)

In “The Wasted Parts”, actor Lola Tung plays two different versions of herself—one climate-conscious, one fashion forward. After a chance meeting in the street, these two Alter/Egos are brought together by the magnetic connection between their Coach and Coachtopia bags.
